About the instrument: Steel tongue drums (also called hang drums, tank drums, slit drums, propane drums and hand tank drums) are remarkable musical instruments that gained their popularity among soundtrack producers, alternative and street musicians due to their unique, enchanting tone. They are also great meditation and relaxation tools because of their pleasant, natural resonance and hypnotizing, captivating timbre. The drum used in creation of this library is one of a kind, custom made by a Polish artisan using an old propane tank, who gave it its distinctive, slightly dissonant sound and uncanny tuning (D-E-F-A-C-E-F). Recording process: We tirelessly played the instrument with different articulations and dynamics to bring the range of the instrument in its full scope into your projects. Each note has been carefully recorded with varying strength using fingers and soft mallets. The natural tone has been recorded using 2 microphone perspectives: – The details and percussive properties from upper part of the instrument were captured in stereo using a pair of Neumann KM184 condenser microphones. – The fullness and low end vibrations from the bottom were recorded using Shure SM56 dynamic microphone.
